History
The Society’s History:
The Society was formed in December 1991 on the initiative of Mr Gautam Bodiwala CBE (then head of Accident and Emergency at Leicester Royal Infirmary) supported by Mr David Mitchell (then partner with solicitors Owstons – now Shakespeare Martineau LLP) with the intention of creating a better understanding and useful dialogue between the two professions.
Other major cities with Medical and Law societies had their own Medico-Legal societies and it was felt that Leicester should join their ranks.
The inaugural meeting of interested doctors and lawyers took place on 2nd December 1991 to establish the Leicestershire Medico-Legal Society and to hold the first Annual General Meeting after the formation of the Society that evening. For many years Society meetings were held at the Post Graduate Medical Centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Mr Bodiwala was elected President for the first year with Mr Mitchell succeeding in the second year, followed by alternating medical and legal presidents thereafter.
Lectures organised by the Society have involved eminent members of both professions, including Deans, Professors, Q.Cs, Judges and other specialists in a variety of medical and legal disciplines.
The Society’s logo is designed to signify Caduceus as a symbol with a short staff entwined by two serpents as a medical symbol, and a scale as the legal symbol of justice.
